Science DictionaryWiry-coated Jack Russell terrier.Photo: Tim Davis/Photo ResearchersScience DictionaryScience DictionaryScience DictionaryScience DictionaryHeight: 12-15 inches.Weight: 9-15 lbs.Life Span: 14-15 yrs.Breed Group: TerriersOverviewJack Russells make very enjoyable companions when raised in the right setting--roomy suburban or country areas. They were bred as runners and are not suited for city or apartment life. Because they retain their working instincts and may chase and kill cats, rabbits, and other small animals, they should always be leashed or exercised in a secured area. Obedience training must start early because these dogs are easily distracted by surrounding activities and scents. They enjoy children and other dogs if exposed to them at an early age. They will bark when someone comes to the door but are not usually aggressive. They can, however, be protective of their property--toys and food bowls and such.AppearanceThe Jack Russell's distinctive ears fold forward. Its coat can be smooth or wiry and is mostly white with some black and/or tan markings. Grooming & Exercise NeedsJack Russells need to be brushed weekly. They need vigorous play and exercise daily. OriginsThe Jack Russell terrier was developed in England in the 19th century to run with horses in pursuit of foxes.Special AlertsBreed-related health concerns: Legg-Perthes disease, patellar luxation, deafness.
